Our Focus
Fostering excellence in the management of nonprofit and public sector institutions.
Using the same core management principles that led to their success in the for-profit world, the Mandel brothers established, led and supported high-performing nonprofit organizations.
The Mandel Foundation is committed to supporting the development of exceptional nonprofits with strong executive leadership, skilled staff and volunteers, and a commitment to superior services. To help nonprofits and public sector institutions build a strong workforce pipeline, the Foundation operates and funds programs within its areas of engagement that provide educational and career development training to nonprofit professionals, board members, and volunteer leaders.

$10M Gift to Establish Mandel Institute for Social Leadership at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
In support of its commitment to fostering excellence in the management of nonprofit organizations, the Mandel Foundation began investing in nonprofit leadership development at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), one of Israel’s leading research institutions, in 2003. Initially, the Foundation provided annual operating support for the Israeli Center for Third Sector Research and later the Mandel Social Leadership MBA program. Based on a shared commitment to leadership development in the nonprofit sector, the relationship between BGU and the Foundation was strengthened by a $10 million capital grant in 2014 to construct the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Institute for Social Leadership. The Mandel Social Leadership MBA continues to be its flagship program, and annual support from the Foundation advances its mission of training and developing top leaders for Israel's nonprofit and public sectors. The highly unique and selective Social Leadership MBA program is rooted in a curriculum that integrates management and leadership approaches and skills, together with a deep exploration of social issues and the role of civil society in a modern democratic state, to enable graduates to lead civil society organizations to fulfill their goals.
Annual Support for Mandel Center for Leadership Excellence, Federation Human Resources Development
Beginning in 2000, the Mandel Foundation committed to advancing the efforts of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland to improve the quality of its staff and lay leadership. Initially this involved funding for the Federation’s Human Resources Development, the Mandel Symposium, the Mandel Course for Advanced Leadership, and funding for a full-time staff member dedicated to human resources and leadership development for the Jewish community. These initiatives are now collectively recognized as the Mandel Center for Leadership Excellence (Mandel Center), which receives increasing levels of annual support for its role as a community-wide learning organization, ensuring that Cleveland maintains a tradition of outstanding agency leadership. The Mandel Center assists Federation staff, lay leaders, and partner agencies in achieving organizational goals through professional development, performance management, and succession planning. It also aims to increase the engagement and development of high-potential lay leaders to build a strong future for the Cleveland Jewish community.
