The Weizmann Institute of Science, named for the first President of the State of Israel, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, and located in Rehevot, Israel, is among the world’s leading multidisciplinary research institutions in the natural and exact sciences. With the rapid advancement of science, the education of scientists has become increasingly focused on the technical aspects of science at the expense of a broader humanistic education. In 2021, the Mandel Foundation responded to this shift with a grant to establish the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Program for Art, Humanities, and Science. With a focus on graduate coursework in the humanities, educational lectures, and cultural events, the program not only enriches the work of Weizmann Institute scientists by developing a strong basis in humanities, but also provides them with the historical context and values necessary for ethical and responsible scientific conduct.
