The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, located on the National Mall, is a living memorial to the Holocaust, inspiring citizens and leaders worldwide to confront hatred, prevent genocide, and promote human dignity. Through a 2014 $10 million endowment grant to the Museum, the Mandel Foundation established the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies. An international leader in scholarship on the Holocaust, the Mandel Center provides for continued growth and vitality in the field of Holocaust studies, promotes networking and cooperative projects among Holocaust scholars around the world, and encourages future generations of scholars in the United States and abroad.

An additional $5 million five-year grant was allocated in 2025 to support the expansion of existing Mandel Center programs, compensate for anticipated reductions in federal funding, and launch new initiatives that ensure Holocaust scholars have the resources, opportunities, and institutional support needed to sustain the field. This funding will also allow the Mandel Center to expand open access to Holocaust scholars’ academic publications, bringing this important work to researchers, students, and educators online for free.
